Pine Siskin
Spinus pinus

The Pine Siskin is an irruptive species, appearing in large numbers in Massachusetts during occasional winters, then sometimes lingering to breed in the aftermath of large irruptions. A sizeable winter flight that occurred during the second Breeding Bird Atlas period accounts for the significant increase in its spring-time breeding distribution. Still, the long-term wintering trend for this species is less optimistic.
