Hands-on Conservation of Spadefoot Toads in Schools

Educating our youth is perhaps the most important goal of this project.  Through the program, young people can realize a sense of empowerment as they take part in real–life conservation projects in their own “back yards”.  Long Pasture offers schools two ways to engage in this project:

In the Classroom with A Head Start for Toads Program

This hands-on science and conservation classroom program by Long Pasture and Grassroots Wildlife Conservation engages students in vernal pools and their vital role in our native ecosystems while raising (head starting) tadpoles in the classroom. Our teacher-naturalists and scientists provide interactive curriculum based classroom presentations on tadpole and vernal pool ecology and conservation.

Head starting tadpoles in the classroom is a fantastic way for students to learn about life cycles, adaptations and vernal pool ecology. Many schools already raise tadpoles in their classrooms as part of the science curriculum. However, tadpoles are often obtained from out-of-state and cannot be released back into the wild. Our tadpoles are from wild-collected eggs so that after head starting they can safely be returned to their native habitat. Students and teachers can feel good about helping local wildlife and can even go on field investigations to visit their frog’s home.

Wetlands Creation Partnership Between Long Pasture and Schools

Long Pasture and the Center for Wetland and Stream Restoration are partnering with schools to create wetlands on their campuses or abutting protected land. Students and teachers take part in the planning, design and construction of these wetlands. These wetlands can serve as “living labs” for the students while restoring critical habitat for rare wetland species. As part of the lab experience, students learn about the principles of active habitat management, endangered species biology and ecological engineering techniques.  These actions are at the cutting edge of conservation biology in our rapidly changing natural world.

We can even say the following to further strengthen our offering: We are offering students the opportunity to take part in real-life conservation in their community, working with professional biologists
