Martha's Vineyard: A Field Guide to Island Nature, 2014

In this guidebook, named one of the Best Books of New England for 2014 in the Boston Globe, author Suzan Bellincampi takes you both on the favorite Island trails and behind the scenes in what the natural Vineyard has to offer. She even explains how the Vineyard was formed by glaciers moving across the land, and the clues to the past those massive ice forms left behind.

The book has trail guides to six of her favorite walks on the Island, with specific directions and what you can see along the way. It also includes sketches of the flora and fauna on the Vineyard, to help you recognize all the plants and animals that call the Island home. The text is accompanied by beautiful Island photographs and illustrations.

I totally love this educational guidebook! Having lived on the Vineyard for some time, this has helped me fall in love even more. Suzan Bellincampi has taken a delightful place and brought me closer to island nature and the appreciation and conservation of it. A wonderful must-read for all who truly love and care for Martha's Vineyard! —Reader review

Suzan Bellincampi works for conservation and community.

From the suburbs of New Jersey where she grew up and went to college to the wilds of West Africa, where she served as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Niger, Suzan has dedicated herself to environmental protection. After a four year stint sailing aboard a restored oyster schooner and teaching estuarine ecology, she landed on Martha's Vineyard in 1999.

Suzan became Director of Mass Audubon's Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in 2006. Wild edibles, plants, and marine creatures strike her fancy, and she pens the weekly "All Outdoors" nature column for the Vineyard Gazette. She lives in West Tisbury with her chickens, bees, and her husband in a home they built themselves.
