Swedish artist Lars Jonsson is widely regarded as one of the greatest living bird artists. At the age of 15, he exhibited his work at the National Museum of Natural History in Stockholm.

The author and illustrator of many field guides, Jonsson is best known for his Birds of Europe, the essential companion for any European birder. Jonsson’s watercolors, usually done in the field, masterfully integrate accuracy, artistry and immediacy.

For Mass Audubon’s centennial in 1996, Jonsson created 187 watercolors and drawings, many of which were used as illustrations in the book, The Nature of Massachusetts.
