Andy Warhol (1928-1987)

Endangered Species: Bald Eagle, Andy Warhol
Endangered Species: Bald Eagle, Andy Warhol

While Andy Warhol’s best-known work examines modern urban life and consumer culture, his interest in nature was life-long.

Throughout the 1950s Warhol had a highly active and lucrative career as a commercial illustrator in New York City, and made thousands of images derived from nature. As a mature fine artist from about 1960 to his untimely death in 1987, Warhol completed a variety of works relating to nature, including his Endangered Species series (1983).

Warhol donated 100 of the Endangered Species prints to wildlife conservation organizations to support their work. Mass Audubon received two, which are still in our collection: the Bald Eagleand Pine Barrens Tree Frog.
