Ring-necked Pheasant, A.J. King

Rhode Island artist A. J. King tried his hand at any available medium, but it wasn’t until he was in his fifties that he began carving. Until that time he worked a variety of jobs, including farming, textile millwork, taxidermy and jewelry design.

He became the finest bird carver of his era, creating keenly-seen and knowledgeable bird studies. Working on a scale one-half the size of his fellow artists, he created twice the detail, defined with more complex paint.
