Living With Wildlife

Most frequently asked questions and answers for summer!
Mass Audubon, with its state-wide sanctuary system and extensive education and advocacy programs, is well known throughout the Commonwealth. For that reason, people often turn to Mass Audubon when they have natural history questions or need advice about living with wildlife.

As urban sprawl increasingly consumes more and more open space, encounters between humans and wildlife become more and more common. For most people, observing wildlife in their backyard is a thrilling experience, but when an animal causes damage or attempts to occupy the same living space, conflicts occur.

The purpose of this manual is to deliver helpful, consistent, and above all, correct information about living with wildlife. The management solutions listed are those that have been tested by government agencies, humane societies, and homeowners and found to be the most successful. We encourage you to use these strategies rather than spend time and money on options that do not work or are, at best, temporary.
