Growing on bark, logs, soil, and rocks, lichens are more easily spotted and studied when leafy plants are dormant, which makes winter a great time to study them. Explore the variety of lichens at the Museum of American Bird Art Education Center and practice field identification of common lichen types found in Eastern Massachusetts. Bring a hand lens (at least 10x), if you have one, or borrow one of ours. A notepad and close focusing digital camera or smart phone will also be useful, but not essential.
