Winter is a great time to see waterbirds, like ducks, loons, and gulls out on the ocean. How do these different kinds of birds make their way in those cold waters? What are their ways of moving, finding food, and staying warm? Why don't their feet freeze?

In this program, we will start by spending time in the classroom exploring skeletons, wing shapes, and much more as we build an understanding of how these birds stay comfortable in conditions that humans find harsh and forbidding. Then we will go outside together and look for birds in the river behind Joppa Flats.

This program is focused on beginners, and no experience in birdwatching or prior knowledge of bird biology is required. No hiking is required to participate.

Instructions and Directions:

Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center. Bring binoculars and a field guide to birds if you have them; otherwise, you'll be able to borrow them from us. Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather. Joppa Flats offers restrooms, accessible parking, and easy access to the backyard, where we will be watching birds.

Masks are not required indoors if a county is noted as having moderate or low levels of transmission, but they are required if county levels are high. Otherwise, masks indoors and outdoors are optional.
