The Birder's Certificate Program (BCP), offered annually by Mass Audubon since 2004, is a key component in our ongoing efforts to provide the finest educational programs that inform and excite the public about the nature of Massachusetts.
Mass Audubon staff developed the certificate program in collaboration with college faculty, experienced birders, and professional ornithologists. The program is equivalent to an undergraduate-level ornithology course, with the addition of extensive field time and the opportunity for self-directed study.
The program covers a wide range of subject matter, including avian systematics, biology, physiology, behavior, ecology, biogeography, and conservation. Eleven modules will combine classroom and field experience, and student comprehension will be evaluated through homework assignments. A twelfth module involves independent study. The program can be completed within one calendar year. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of achievement and a BCP binoculars harness.
