Would you expect to find a shorebird at the edge of a forest? Come learn about the strange and wonderful American Woodcock.
Because of its solitary habits and superb camouflage, the American Woodcock is nearly impossible to see, except during its breeding displays. We will venture out in search of male birds displaying so we can truly appreciate this magical springtime activity.
You'll also discover that these little birds are full of surprises. How many other birds can sing with their wings? And are there any other animals with eyes almost in the back of their heads? You have to be truly strange to earn the nickname of 'timberdoodle' or 'bog sucker.'
Instructions and Directions:
To preserve the magic of the night, we will try to minimize our use of flashlights and please no sneakers that flash or light up.
Please wear long pants and sturdy shoes as this hike covers uneven terrain. Insect repellent is recommended.
All participants will be required to wear a face mask and abide by social distancing guidelines. Registered participants will receive an email regarding specific Covid 19 safety protocols.
