Mass Audubon Involvement

Mass Audubon has submitted comments to federal, state, and local agencies and project proponents in response to several wind energy projects including the Cape Wind project, and we will continue to participate in environmental review and permitting processes. With grant funding from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, Mass Audubon also conducted independent bird surveys in Nantucket Sound to supplement the Cape Wind sponsored surveys. Further information on Mass Audubon's involvement in the Cape Wind project.

The Obama Administration established an Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force in June 2009, led by the White House Council on Environmental Quality. The Task Force is charged with developing a recommendation for a National Ocean Policy that ensures protection, maintenance, and restoration of oceans, coasts and the Great Lakes. These recommendations include appropriate zones of use for wind energy and other projects in Massachusetts waters. In December 2009 the Ocean Policy Task Force released its Interim Framework for Effective Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning. Mass Audubon and others commented on this important national initiative.
