Who May Submit Art
The exhibition is open to young artists age 4 to 18 of all skill levels. Parents or guardians need to submit all information and artwork for all children under the age of 13.
- The theme of the 2020 exhibition is My Favorite Bird(s), and the artwork should reflect that theme.
- All artwork must be on 9 x 12 inch paper, no more than ¼ inch thick.
- All artwork must have been completed in 2020 or 2019.
- Entries must be the young person’s original work, created by hand. Artwork cannot have been copied from any source.
- Submissions can range from realistic to abstract.
- Mediums may include, but are not limited to: ink, paint (watercolor, acrylic, gouache, oil), colored pencil, crayon, prints, graphite, charcoal, collage, and pastel. Photography and digital art are not permitted.
- A maximum of three works may be entered per artist.
- Submission is by digital image (see "How to Submit" below). Entries selected by the jury must be sent to the museum for framing and exhibition.
All entrants are strongly encouraged to write a short message (~150 words) about how the meaning behind their artwork, and how it ties to the theme of Favorite Birds. This message will be submitted with your entry.
How to Submit
- Each artwork must be represented by a digital image in JPEG format submitted via our online submission tool. Image files cannot exceed 10 MB in size.
- When photographing the artwork for online submission, artists are encouraged to remove any extraneous background that might impact the jurors' ability to view and accurately judge the image.
When to Submit
Submissions will be accepted until July 15, 2020.
Selection and Notification
- Artwork to be included in the exhibition will be selected by a panel designated by the Museum of American Bird Art. Criteria will include originality, creativity, composition, and adherence to the theme of the exhibition. Jurors and museum staff determine the eligibility of the artwork with sole and absolute discretion.
- All submitting artists will be notified by e-mail of selection decisions by the end of August 2020. No selection decisions will be released over the telephone.
- It is the responsibility of the artists whose work is selected to ship their artwork to the museum by August, 26, 2020, and must be received by September 8, 2020. Packing and shipping instructions will be sent with selection notification. Financial assistance may be available if the cost of shipping is an impediment for the artist.
- If artists want their artwork returned after the exhibition, it is their responsibility to pay the cost of the shipping.
- Artwork will be matted and framed for the exhibition. At the end of the exhibition, artwork will be removed from the frames to be picked up or shipped. Collection of the artwork is the responsibility of the artist.
- The exhibition will run from September 2020 - March 2021 at the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon, with an opening reception that will be announced at a later date.
- Mass Audubon reserves the right not to display any selected work that does not correspond to the quality or configuration indicated in the submitted images.
Other Uses of Images and Writing
Images and writing submitted will be retained by Mass Audubon, and may be used in Mass Audubon publications.
By entering Taking Flight, the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon international juried youth bird art exhibition, you hereby grant to Mass Audubon (i) nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable publication rights for your artwork and writing in all Mass Audubon publicity materials, print or electronic, and (ii) the right to use your name, city, state, and country of residence in such publications. This includes the right to use your artwork and writing on our website, in print and electronic advertisements and promotions, and in our saleable merchandise. All artwork will be credited with the caption "© Artist's Name."
