About This Position
Mass Audubon is hiring a Visitor Services staff member to greet and engage visitors as they spend time at the Boston Nature Center (BNC). The BNC community of visitors, participants, volunteers, and staff is diverse in ethnicity, socio-economics, gender, abilities, and more. As a community nature center, the visitor services member has a key role in creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for visitors as they explore the trails, take part in educational programs and utilize the buildings and grounds for a wide variety of community events. The Visitor Services Representative is responsible for providing excellent customer service while greeting and registering visitors in person and by phone, providing orientation to the sanctuary, directing visitors throughout the property and trail systems, answering questions about events and programs, monitoring the building and grounds, introducing visitors to the mission of Mass Audubon and advocating for the protection of the environment. The Lead Visitor Service member will also support the operations manager in basic administrative functions and projects. The Visitor Services member has an integral role as a welcoming ambassador of Mass Audubon’s Boston Nature Center that supports the equitable and inclusive access to a green space and a community nature center.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Greet and provide information to visitors regarding the community nature center, the trails, educational programs, and Mass Audubon.
- Answer phone calls/monitor voice mails and provide information, guidance, and direction.
- Assist with program registrations.
- Update visitor signage, brochures, and other materials.
- Understand and promote membership opportunities.
- Use credit card machine for sales and registrations.
- Monitor radio and be prepared to serve as primary communication point-of-contact in case of emergency per standing policies and procedures.
- Handle opening and closing procedures including end-of-day sales tallying.
- Assist community rentals with their composting, recycling, and building questions.
- Monitor and assist in cleaning bathrooms, recycling, and compost stations to support property staff.

- Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion.
- Must be at least 21 years of age. Associates degree or equivalent experience is a plus.
- Customer Service/Visitor Service experience preferred.
- Excellent people skills and enthusiasm for a team working environment.
- Organized with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Office skills including computer, copier, scanning, and phone system.
- Experience with varied computer software programs (Office 365, Outlook, Word, Excel).
- A demonstrated ability to work well with other staff, volunteers, and community representatives as well as independently when necessary.
- CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to get the certification.
Nice to Have’s:
- Fluency in English/Spanish (or other languages) is desirable.
- Formal training or other experience in either the natural sciences or education.
- Experience helping to set up events and meetings
Compensation & Benefits
This position’s base salary range is $16.50 - $17.79; the actual salary will reflect the level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.
This is a year-round position and earns vacation time as well as receives paid holidays.
The position is year-round on Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm with optional additional hours available for weekday meetings and events, Monday holidays, vacation fill-ins, and evening events.
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
