About This Position

Reporting the President, the Senior Director of Land Conservation plays a fundamentally important role in the execution of our Action Agenda and we are seeking an individual that is a proven conservationist, and a person who can serve as a leader in Massachusetts land conservation community.

The Senior Director will coordinate all aspects of major land conservation projects and will lead the Land Conservation team to identify, evaluate, facilitate, and execute acquisitions of land and rights in land for conservation purposes throughout Massachusetts in a manner consistent with Mass Audubon’s Action Agenda.

Importantly, the Senior Director will also develop and maintain strategic relationships with government agencies and nonprofit conservation organizations, donors, and oversee legal duties relating to transactions, including compliance with Land Trust Accreditation standards.

The Senior Director also is responsible for taking actions that maintain and enhance Mass Audubon’s leadership role in the Massachusetts land conservation community, including helping to form a new Resilient Lands Partnership Coalition. Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of land conservation in this geographic region, broad management experience, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and a willingness to identify and cultivate potential private and public funding sources.

Duties & Responsibilities

Programs

  • Provide inspiring leadership within and outside of Mass Audubon on all land conservation matters.
  • Lead strategic land conservation planning in consultation with Conservation Science to identify land conservation priorities across the state.
  • Leverage Mass Audubon resources to achieve the greatest land conservation outcomes across the state by negotiating and partnering with private landowners, public agencies, businesses, and other nonprofit organizations.
  • Develop and pursue public policy initiatives, in coordination with the Policy and Advocacy Department, that strengthen opportunities to protect land for the benefit of biodiversity, access to nature, and to address climate change.
  • Evaluate land conservation proposals to ensure consistency with Mass Audubon policies and Land Trust Accreditation standards; promote the financial and legal advantages of conservation strategies with donors and sellers; promote gifts and bargain sales of land. Provide assessment of liabilities, including hazardous waste issues of properties, and assess the maintenance and security aspects of proposed land acquisitions prior to their acquisition by the Mass Audubon.
  • Provide oversight of the Land Conservation team to ensure Conservation Restriction stewardship efforts and Mass Audubon’s permanent land records are maintained at a high level.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Board Real Estate Committee and other Board of Directors Committees with a responsibility to communicate land conservation priorities in general and the circumstances of individual transactions when appropriate.

Fundraising

  • Seek major gifts and grants to support land conservation capital projects and operating budget, and coordinate fundraising projects in cooperation with the Chief Development Officer.
  • Promote, refine, and implement House to Habitat and Conservation Legacy Agreement (CLA) programs in cooperation with the Philanthropy. Ensure adequate annual monitoring of CLAs.

Administration

  • Supervise assigned staff and consultants by making routine employment decisions, salary recommendations, and providing training for staff. Carry out goal setting and performance reviews for assigned staff.
  • Prepare and implement operating and capital budgets for land conservation.

Communications

  • Respond to media inquiries and support the preparation of media materials in cooperation with the Director of Marketing & Communications and others.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 8 years natural resource management or land use planning experience with public and/or private organizations.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of land conservation strategies and techniques, staff recruitment and evaluation processes, budget planning and management protocols, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and a willingness to identify and cultivate potential private and public funding sources.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule to attend evening and weekend meetings as needed.

Compensation & Benefits

This position’s base salary range is $125,000 - $140,000; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

Additional Information

Work Schedule:
The standard work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week Monday through Friday. However, the position requires a great deal of flexibility and the ability to work some weekends and occasional evenings to meet the needs of the program and organization.

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.

Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
