Sanctuary Director – Nantucket Sanctuaries

Mass Audubon is seeking an entrepreneurial, inspirational leader with a background in land stewardship, habitat management, non-profit management, donor development, environmental science and education to serve as Sanctuary Director of Mass Audubon’s properties on Nantucket.  The Sanctuary Director encourages innovation and creativity, and works collaboratively with island members, donors, and volunteers to achieve the sanctuary’s strategic goals.  The Sanctuary Director will lead Mass Audubon’s conservation, education, and advocacy efforts on Nantucket. The Sanctuary Director provides a dynamic and welcoming presence as Mass Audubon’s representative on the island and actively partners with other community and environmental organizations to promote regional objectives.  

Mass Audubon’s Nantucket wildlife sanctuaries include two of the state’s rarest habitats – coastal heathlands and sandplain grassland.  Our properties on Nantucket include the 875 acre Sesachacha Heathlands Wildlife Sanctuary, which is open to the public and includes five miles of trails.  Lost Farm Wildlife Sanctuary is a 77 acre property located along the eastern shore of Hummock Pond, and includes the Mass Audubon office and staff housing on the island.  Smith’s Point Wildlife Sanctuary is a 17 acre property on the southwest corner of Nantucket that is closed to the public, and provides suitable habitat for a variety of nesting coastal waterbirds. 

Our Nantucket Sanctuary Director will manage these properties and strategically grow our public presence on the island.  Current research and conservation efforts on Nantucket include coastal waterbirds management, research work with partners on native bat populations, plant ecology and invasives management, and use of prescribed fire, working with a burn team comprised of other island partners.   

The Sanctuary Director will have experience and demonstrated ability to build upon and grow our partnership with the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station, and create and implement opportunities for diverse high school and college students to learn about the environment and grow their interest in future conservation careers. 

Responsibilities

The Sanctuary Director is responsible for all aspects of our work on Nantucket, including: 

  • Development and implementation of long-range strategic goals;
  • Development and monitoring of annual plans and budgets;
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with members, neighbors, local partners, educational institutions, and government officials;
  • Provide excellent customer service for all sanctuary visitor contacts;
  • Fundraising for annual operations and capital campaigns in coordination with the Mass Audubon Philanthropy Division;
  • Hiring, training, and supervision of coastal waterbird seasonal staff, working in close collaboration with the Mass Audubon Coastal Waterbirds Program;
  • Developing and implementing environmental education programs for families, adults, and schools;
  • Conservation science programs involving coastal wildlife, plant ecology and natural resource stewardship, in collaboration with the Mass Audubon Regional Scientist and local partners;
  • Land conservation in coordination with Mass Audubon Land Protection Program;
  • Increasing community visibility through social media and marketing in coordination with the Mass Audubon Division of Marketing and Communications;
  • Community outreach with a focus on equity and inclusion;
  • Ongoing coordination with Mass Audubon headquarters staff regarding programmatic, operational, and human resources policies and procedures;
  • Successfully engaging and sustaining adult and youth volunteers; and
  • Project management on longer term programming opportunities and facility maintenance, renovations and upgrades.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources management, environmental education, planning, biology, non-profit management or related field or equivalent work experience.  Coastal experience preferred.
  • Two years’ experience in teaching, program coordination, non-profit management, business or program coordination, or environmental management.
  • Successful track record in donor cultivation and development.
  • Experience developing and implementing annual program plans, budgets and strategic goals.
  • Ability to support, supervise, and inspire staff and volunteers.
  • Passion for the mission of Mass Audubon and for inspiring others to explore the natural world.  Ability to establish an effective Mass Audubon presence in surrounding communities and with visitors from around the country and the world. Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.  Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural humility and inclusion.
  • Solid, up-to-date technology skills.
  • Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator License, or willingness to obtain.
  • Fire training (S-130/190) and experience with prescribed fire, or willingness to obtain.
  • Successful candidates must have a valid driver’s license, and pass a driver’s record, Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) checks.  Must successfully complete First Aid and CPR Certification upon hire.
