About This Position
Mass Audubon's Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is hiring a part-time Beach Ranger who will inform visitors about sensitive coastal resources and facilitate desired trail use. The Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary offers 9 miles of trails for visitors to experience a barrier beach, a coastal salt pond, grasslands, shrub lands, and forested uplands at a rural location in southeastern Massachusetts.
The Beach Ranger provides an active and enthusiastic presence at the Sanctuary, engages the public in positive interactions that promote understanding of wildlife and habitat, informs visitors about policies regarding sanctuary visitation, describes current monitoring projects and property goals, and inspires visitors to support our organizational priorities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Patrol the beach, trail, and parking areas,
- Greet sanctuary visitors,
- Provide information about natural resources, sanctuary activities, and local opportunities,
- Record data regarding human and wildlife activities,
- Remove litter and invasive plants,
- Maintain the Beach Loop trail and signage,
- Assist sanctuary-based Coastal Waterbird Program staff,
- Learn to identify coastal birds and plants,
- Assist with public programs,
- Contribute to equipment and facility care as a member of the team,
- Other tasks as directed.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with demonstrated:
- Ability to work in physically demanding settings and weather conditions while walking considerable distances across varied and uneven terrain,
- Ability to prepare and carry personal equipment and educational materials as well as occasionally lift and move up to 40lbs,
- Strong interpersonal and communication (oral, written) skills,
- Self-motivation, enthusiasm, reliability, flexibility, curiosity, and positive attitude,
- Ability to interact with the public in a professional manner and work both cooperatively and independently,
- Availability to work every and all weekends through August 22 (weather-permitting),
- Access to device(s) for communication by phone, text, virtual meeting and email.
Nice to Have’s:
- Experience in positions of customer service, public safety, national/ state park ranging, museum interpretation, and similar work or volunteer positions,
- Demonstrated initiative and interest in leadership, teaching, or non-traditional education,
- Strong interest in wildlife conservation, natural resource management, outdoor recreation, landscape management, and/ or related subjects.
Compensation & Benefits
Base rate is $14.50 per hour; actual wage will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.
This is not a benefits eligible position.
The 4- to 5-day work week falls from Thursday to Monday and includes both weekend days. Working over the July 4th holiday is mandatory. The number of hours is typically 5-6 per day, primarily late-morning to late afternoon, for a weekly maximum of 24 hours per week. Specific days each week and number of hours each day are dependent on weather conditions that attract people to the coast.
This is a seasonal position and will end August 25, 2022.
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
