Nature Preschool Teacher - Part Time

Mass Audubon seeks a MA EEC Certified Preschool Teacher for the opening of its new Nature Preschool at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown. This EEC-licensed preschool is scheduled to open in September 2019.  Felix Neck is looking for a passionate and energetic teacher who can help cultivate a unique preschool learning environment. 

The ideal candidate would hold an EEC Preschool Teacher certification. Their background would include prior preschool experience, including classroom supervision, community building and the ability to deliver programs that engage young children in whole child learning experiences in the outdoors. The teacher must be able to work outside for a minimum of three hours daily, navigate varied terrain and offer both land and water learning opportunities that meet Massachusetts Department of Early Childhood and Care regulations and MA State Preschool Standards.  

The preschool will serve Martha’s Vineyard children ages 3 to 5 for full-day programming in alignment with the public school calendar, September to June. The position will be part-time through the school-year.


  • Provide a physically and emotionally safe environment for young children in both outdoor and indoor settings
  • Implement a curriculum that reflects the needs of the children, developmentally appropriate standards for early childhood education and the mission of Mass Audubon
  • Follow established protocols and all other preschool regulations
  • Help maintain the physical environment by contributing to housekeeping tasks as needed
  • Spend significant time outdoors with the students during all seasons
  • Maintain schedule as determined by the Preschool Director


  • EEC Preschool Teacher Certification
  • Experience and educational background in environmental and science education preferred
  • Familiarity with inquiry-based education and a constructivist, project based approach
  • Familiarity with state early childhood standards
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work cooperatively and independently required
  • Demonstrated ability to promote and respect diversity of ethnic, cultural, linguistic backgrounds, and physical and mental disabilities
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and commitment to helping others grow in understanding of and concern for the environment and people’s relationship to it
  • Ability to lead walks on trails, current First Aid/CPR or willing to obtain
  • Successful candidates will need to pass a back records check (CORI, SORI and Fingerprinting)

Compensation and Benefits

Position will be part-time, covering 10 hours/wk, compensated hourly at $13/hr
