Experiential Education Program Facilitator Naturalist - Per Diem

Are you passionate about sharing your knowledge of nature and science with children and facilitating group process? Moose Hill is hiring capable, enthusiastic educators and facilitators to serve as School Field Trip Facilitator Naturalist in accordance with the Mass Audubon’s goals and objectives. Join our dynamic staff team in teaching experiential and environmental education programs to diverse groups of students’ ages 10 to 18 years old. Training and curricula are provided for our low ropes course program and our Ropes of Ecology programs.

Schedule is irregular but flexible. Applicant must be available 2 to 5 days per week from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm during field trip seasons (October – November and mid-February – end of June).


  • Conduct activities which use low ropes course elements and mobile initiatives to facilitate group development and ecological literacy learning. 
  • Actively engage students in learning
  • Present information at the appropriate level for the age of the group using multiple methods to engage participants in the learning process
  • Demonstrate knowledge of program materials.
  • Have a firm knowledge of the trail system.
  • Have knowledge and experience with experiential education pedagogy.
  • Prepare materials as needed for activities.
  • Check in with your supervisor at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled program start.
  • Maintain a clean work environment, which includes equipment cleanup and storage.
  • Protect the physical and emotional welfare of the participants and self.
  • Participate in training activities
  • Visually identify safety issues related to program function
  • Monitor your group in all types of indoor and outdoor environments (forest, field, swamp, pond) and listen for key safety concerns and alerts
  • Appropriately and skillfully  communicate with participants, visitors and staff
  • Assume additional related duties as requested


  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Have BA or BS or working towards one, preferably in environmental education, environmental studies, outdoor recreation, experiential education, biology or earth science.
  • Previous experience working with children in educational settings, and facilitation a plus;
  • Be able to lead tours on trails and rough terrain. The applicant must be able walk at the pace of a mile in 15 minutes between stopping places in the program.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid a plus;
  • Prior to being scheduled to facilitate programs, the facilitator naturalist must demonstrate knowledge of program materials, experiential education concepts, facilitation skills, and an understanding of the adventure process. Also basic knowledge of ecological literacy. Shadowing a program first may be a requirement.
  • Successful candidates will need to pass a background records check (CORI and SORI).

Compensation and Benefits

Rate of Pay: $11.50 - $13.00 per hour depending on experience.
