About This Position

Mass Audubon is looking for a creative, passionate, energetic, and organized Environmental Educator.

This Education Coordinator position works as part of a dynamic team of staff who support education efforts at our sanctuaries, regional schools, community venues, and other locations. The Education Coordinator spends the majority of their time coordinating, developing and teaching introductory level programs for youth in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational philosophy, goals, standards, and practices. They serve as a resource on natural history, environmental justice, and climate change issues for program participants, visitors, staff, and volunteers.

This Education Coordinator position designs, coordinates, teaches and evaluates K-12 environmental education programs for schools in Pittsfield and other Berkshire communities. This position also leads adult and family education programs throughout the Berkshires. The program focus for this position includes in-school enrichment programs (approximately 50%); summer and vacation camps (approximately 10%), afterschool programs (approximately 10%), other adult and family programs (20%). During the school year this position plans and implements in-school and afterschool nature/science enrichment programs. During the summer months this position leads adult and family education and outreach programs and assists with camp program, as needed. Most of the duties occur on weekdays with occasional weekend or evening programs. During the summer (July and August) the regular schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, with occasional Sunday hours.

Duties & Responsibilities

Management/Supervision:

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead youth education programs in the Berkshires, in partnership with public and private schools.
  • Plan, coordinate, promote, and lead adult and family education programs in the Berkshires, in partnership with community groups and other organizations.
  • Assist with the maintenance of accurate records of programs, program participants, and education files.
  • Monitor program registration, create and maintain records, and track program revenue and expense data. Inform supervisor of variances and take steps to change program registration trends, if needed.
  • Assist with developing and monitoring program budgets, and maintaining records of revenue and expenses.
  • Assist with development of regional budgets including revenue forecasts.
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising part-time, and seasonal/per diem staff to support all programs.

 Education:

  • Orient program partners, participants and community members to Mass Audubon’s mission and programs. Actively engage in learning about the community needs and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate environmental education programming for K-12 school enrichment, afterschool programs, and adult and family programs, with demonstrated skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion.
  • Plan and lead inquiry-based, environmental education units/lessons/activities with local schools, sanctuary field trips for schools/groups, after school and summer programs for adults and families that develops science skills and ecology and conservation knowledge. 
  • Prepare and conduct activities for community engagement, events, and other related educational activities.
  • Work in collaboration with supervisors, including Regional Education Managers and statewide Education Department to ensure adherence to relevant program standards and regulations, as well as alignment with Mass Audubon audience frameworks and instructional best practices.
  • Implement program assessment tools according to Mass Audubon guidelines and practices. Analyze results for evaluation and communicate outcomes to supervisors for program decision making.
  • Assist with training and supervision of part-time/per diem field teachers and volunteers to ensure high quality program design and instruction.
  • Assist with coordinating and marketing of special trainings for professional audiences, including professional development for school teachers, organized groups, and Mass Audubon staff.
  • Maintain updated educational supplies, curricula, materials, and resources.
  • Maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority, in accordance with specific program regulations and policies. Assist with preparation of documentation for licenses, ACA accreditation, and state permits.
  • Participate in the planning, writing, and preparation of audience specific program materials, site-based informational brochures, and education related publications, including e-communications.
  • Attend regional staff meetings and actively participate in statewide education staff meetings, audience professional learning communities, and professional development trainings, as required.
  • Support special events, membership development, fundraising activities, and other position related duties, as needed or assigned.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or working towards) in life, earth, or environmental sciences, environmental education, nature interpretation, K-12 education, or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years leading environmental education programs, or any equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • One or more years teaching or working with children or youth in an urban setting.
  • Ability to lead groups outdoors in all weather conditions and monitor and manage group safety.
  • Ability to exercise cultural competence and best practices in inclusion.
  • First Aid and CPR (child and adult) certification (training provided upon hire, if needed).

Nice to Haves:

  • Knowledge of local natural history, conservation, and environmental education.
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching or other equity-based pedagogy.
  • Experience driving trailers and ability to move canoes and other heavy equipment
  • Familiarity with the City of Pittsfield and/or the Pittsfield Public School system.
  • One or more years delivering urban environmental education programming or equivalent.

Compensation & Benefits

This position’s base salary range is $23.56 - $25.48; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

Additional Information

This is a year-round, 40 hour/week position.
