Education Coordinator/Camp Director - Blue Hills Trailside Museum

Operated in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Blue Hills Trailside Museum serves as the visitor center for the 7,000 acre state-owned Blue Hills Reservation and features a natural history museum and outdoor exhibits of live native wildlife.  With over 80,000 visitors and 15,000 program participants each year, the Trailside Museum is a vibrant welcoming program center for children, families, and adults.  Programs include a popular summer day camp located at the top of Chickatawbut Hill in the Blue Hills Reservation, programs for all ages featuring live animals both at the Museum and in surrounding schools and community centers; and special events and festivals throughout the year.  Located five miles from Boston and near the junction of major interstate highways, Trailside is a well-loved destination for visitors from communities across the region.

 

We are searching for an enthusiastic, organized, and experienced educator to direct our summer and vacation week day camp program as well as to  plan, coordinate and implement other high quality on-site and off-site environmental education programs for diverse audiences..

Must have:

  • A love of nature and teaching outdoors with children of varied backgrounds ages 4-14.
  • Strong management and organizational skills.
  • An innovative and open approach for continued growth and impact of summer camp and educational programming across the region.
  • Ability to be a resource on local natural history, environmental policy, and conservation science issues.

Responsibilities

  • Develop environmental programming and manage summer nature camp to meet state and American Camping Association requirements.
  • Hire, supervise and mentor camp counselors and part-time educators.
  • Monitor budget and maintain associated files of program revenue and expenses.
  • Coordinate onsite and off-site specialized educational programs for school groups and other audiences.
  • Develop curricula, instructional materials, and other educational resources.
  • Plan, write and prepare brochures, newsletters, and other marketing tools.
  • Promote Mass Audubon’s organizational goals and membership to sanctuary visitors and program participants.
  • Collaborate with other Mass Audubon educators to deliver quality programming and actively participate in statewide education meetings, work groups and professional development trainings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science, environmental studies, or education with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in environmental education or Master’s degree with a minimum of 3 years’ experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires 4 years of prior supervisory experience of staff/volunteers and 4 years of prior experience in budget development and management, as well as revenue forecasting and financial record keeping.
  • Must meet requirements for camp directors consistent with State and ACA standards.
  • First Aid, CPR certification as well as valid driver’s license and ability to travel.
  • Successful completion of CORI and SORI and driver's record checks.
