About This Position

The Community Programs Educator commits the majority of their time to developing and teaching programs to youth in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational philosophy, goals, standards, and practices. This role would support our goals to form stronger partnerships in the local communities by primarily leading afterschool/enrichment programs that run offsite in Lawrence and has the opportunity to help us grow our reach into other Gateway Cities on the North Shore.  The Community Programs Educator assists in the coordination, preparation, and marketing of these educational programs and special events.  Other time may be used to collaborate with the rest of the education team to learn from, develop, and lead more general education programs at Ipswich River and Joppa Flats.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

Education:

  1. Develop lesson plans and teach mainly offsite programs for afterschool series programs, summer enrichment programs, and occasional weekend programs.
  2. Support the Education Coordinator in building and maintaining meaningful relationships with community partner organizations.
  3. Conduct evaluation of programs and other educational related activities.
  4. Maintain educational supplies, curricula, instructional materials, and resources.
  5. Maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority.

Administration/Supervision:

  1. Assist in supporting and coordinating educators, volunteers, and interns when they are involved in relevant programs.
  2. Assist in the planning, scheduling, and marketing of related educational programs.
  3. Maintain accurate records of programs and program participants, and coordinate with the Education Coordinator to meet budget expectations.
  4. Orient visitors, members, and community in Mass Audubon’s mission, programs, and stewardship.

Other:

  1. Attend staff meetings and actively participate in statewide education staff meetings, education work groups, and professional development trainings, as required.
  2. Assist in leading adjacent programs during vacation weeks, camp, special events, field trips, etc. and support membership development and fundraising, as needed.
  3. Perform other position-related duties, as assigned.

Must Haves:

  • Education, training, or experience in any environmental education, outdoor recreation, earth sciences, environmental studies, nature interpretation, etc. areas of interest.
  • Comfort working in an outdoor and/or informal education setting with people who have a wide range of ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Requires successful completion of First Aid and CPR certification upon hire (training provided).
  • Ability to transport supplies between the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary main location and the offsite program locations in Lawrence (work provided transportation can often be arranged pending a clean driving record, and personal driving can be reimbursed).

 Nice to Haves: 

  • Bilingual skills in Spanish/English OR a strong connection to the communities this role would serve (Lawrence, Lynn, Salem, etc.).
  • Knowledge of OR interest in environmental issues that are affecting local urban communities, local natural history, cultural history, environmental injustices and/or conservation science issues.
  • Experience teaching outdoor education program for groups of K – 5th graders.

Compensation & Benefits

This position’s base salary range is $21.10 - $23.65; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

Additional Information

Work Schedule: 

  • Flexible Monday – Friday schedule with afternoon hours (3:00pm – 6:00 pm) required for afterschool programs. 
  • Occasional work in the evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Other Requirements:

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.

COVID-19 Considerations

Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
