About This Position

The Coastal Educator is a Teacher Naturalist who commits the majority of their time to developing and teaching programs to youth, families, and adults in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational philosophy, goals, standards, and practices. This role is responsible for the educational programs focused on coastal ecosystems with a heavy emphasis on science-based lessons or programs with multiple contact hours such as: Salt Marsh Science, Sea Level Rise, and Camp Programs.  Other time may be used to supervise education staff and serve as a resource on natural history, environmental policy, and conservation science issues for visitors, members, other staff, and volunteers. The Coastal Educator assists in some of the coordination, preparation, and marketing of these educational programs and special events.

Duties & Responsibilities

Education: 60%

  • Develop lessons and teach programs that have a focus on coastal ecology and scientific processes and lead these programs in data collection, data analysis, and data presentation.
  • Build and maintain relationships with program participants and community members in order to create longstanding and recurring partnerships for our programs.
  • Assist the Camp Director in launching and Site Directing a summer camp program based out of the Joppa Flats Sanctuary location.
  • Conduct evaluation of related programs.
  • Maintain educational supplies, curricula, instructional materials, and resources.
  • Maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority.

Administration/Supervision: 30%

  • Supervise educators, volunteers, and interns when they are assisting in relevant programs.
  • Assist in the planning, scheduling, and marketing of related educational programs.
  • Maintain accurate records of programs and program participants, and coordinate with the Education Manager to meet budget expectations.
  • Orient visitors, members, and community in Mass Audubon’s mission, programs, and stewardship. 

Other: 10%

  • Attend sanctuary staff meetings and actively participate in statewide education staff meetings, education work groups, and professional development trainings, as required.
  • Assist in activities during camp programs, special events, and other educational programming, and support membership development and fundraising, as needed.
  • Perform other position-related duties, as assigned.

Must Have’s: 

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in either environmental education, earth sciences, environmental sciences/studies, nature interpretation, etc., or degree in related field with a combination of some relevant experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion.
  • Requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire.

 Nice to Have’s: 

  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and communicating findings on data from scientific projects.
  • Experience growing and maintaining partnerships in a local community.
  • Experience teaching in both a formal classroom and informal outdoor setting.
  • Experience meeting the requirements of a grant in a project/program.
  • Knowledge of local natural history, environmental policies and conservation science issues.

Compensation & Benefits

This position’s base salary range is $21.10 - $23.65; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.  

During the summer camp weeks (only), this position is not eligible for 1.5 pay if accruing overtime.

Additional Information

Work Schedule: 

  • Monday – Friday typical business hours, with occasional work during early mornings and evenings, and on weekends and holidays.
  • Full Time (40 hours/week)

Other Requirements:

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.

Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
