Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, January 4, 2022

The following sightings were reported December 29, 2021–January 4, 2022.

A Western Tanager was reported from West Barnstable on Tuesday. Other birds in West Barnstable this week included 43 Wood Ducks, 2 Blue-winged Teal, a Northern Shoveler, a Barred Owl, 2 Rusty Blackbirds, and a Saltmarsh Sparrow.

The Bell’s Vireo continued at Fort Hill in Eastham this week and a Painted Bunting continues in a private yard in East Sandwich.

Highlights from the Truro-Wellfleet Christmas Bird Count on December 30 included a Eurasian Green-winged Teal, a Northern Pintail, several American Woodcocks, a Sora, a Long-eared Owl, a Barred Owl, over 30 Northern Saw-whet Owls, 2 American Pipits, a Bohemian Waxwing a Red Crossbill, 2 Common Redpolls, a Northern Waterthrush, and 2 Orange-crowned Warblers.

At Race Point in Provincetown sightings this week included a Pacific Loon, 2 Atlantic Puffins, 6 Dovekies, a Thick-billed Murre, 98 Common Murres, 2 Black Guillemots, 1125 Razorbills, 35 Black-legged Kittiwakes, and 14 Iceland Gulls.

Other sightings around the Cape this week included Great Egrets in Mashpee and Provincetown, a House Wren in Falmouth, a Black-headed Gull in Barnstable, a Pacific Loon visible from Mass Audubon's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Cummaquid, a Western Willet in West Dennis, 2 continuing Marbled Godwits in Chatham, and several Eastern Phoebes and American Woodcocks.
