Nature Play Is Coming to Wellfleet Bay

After many years in the making, nature play at Wellfleet Bay is becoming a reality! Regular visitors may have noticed some clearing and tree work near the parking lot over the past year or two to prepare for the start of construction.

Unlike static, traditional playgrounds, nature play areas give children a chance to solve problems and construct their surroundings through natural elements and unstructured exploration. Our nature play area will provide children of all ages with opportunities to explore, pretend, and create.

Fun and Accessible Features

Opportunities to get hands-on with natural materials will be plentiful. A boardwalk extending across the small, previously built wetland in this area will lead to a bird blind where kids can use a toy spotting scope and binoculars to search for birds and other wildlife. Bird feeders and carefully staged bird silhouettes will allow for exciting viewing opportunities.

A musical fence and natural materials weaving loom will allow children to showcase their creativity.

For kids looking for more active play, natural log balance beams and wooden stepping “stones” create opportunities for physical challenges.

Best of all, the Nature Play Area is designed for users of all abilities. The boardwalk, bird blind and trails throughout the play area will be wheelchair accessible. A wheelchair accessible table will allow for seated opportunities to construct with natural materials.

A New Community Resource

Project manager Christine Bates, a mother of two, sees the new space as a great way to introduce local kids to fun outdoor experiences.

“Research indicates that children who play and learn in nature are more likely to become future environmental stewards, “ she says. “ I look forward to Wellfleet Bay becoming a place for families to meet up for play dates and to connect with each other and the outdoors through nature play.”

Much of the new Nature Play Area will be ready for this coming summer and an event is planned for the fall to welcome local families.

Mass Audubon Cape Cod is grateful to the many supporters who have made Wellfleet Bay’s Nature Play Area possible. And there’s still time to make a donation to the project. Learn more.
