Vocational Interns Making a Difference

Joppa Flats vocational interns Erin & Katie checking the health of our marine tank animals

In partnership with the Tower Foundation, Joppa Flats offers vocational animal husbandry internships that are designed to give young adults of all ability levels the opportunity to learn practical, hands-on skills for future careers.

This fall we welcomed two new vocational interns, Erin and Katie. They will receive training in basic animal husbandry while providing care for our onsite marine animals.

Behind the scenes, either intern can now be found maintaining our nursery tank, performing water chemistry tests, and even refilling the bird feeders!

Erin has taken the lead on tank repairs and monitoring the water chemistry to ensure a healthy marine environment. Erin also works diligently and carefully to feed all of the animals that live at the sanctuary.

Katie was an intern at Joppa Flats from 2019-2020 and is thrilled to be back. Her main animal husbandry task this year is feeding our marine residents, and she's even mastered the challenge of feeding our lobster Stumpy (affectionately named for his lack of claws).

Joppa Flats strives to be a leading institution where education, leadership, and stewardship come together. Our vocational interns play a critical part in ensuring that our non-releasable animals receive excellent care, and we're incredibly fortunate to have such passionate individuals in this year's program.
