Meet Backyard Birds on Sundays this Winter!

Deb La Roy helping kids release a banded chickadee

Sundays, December 29–March 8
10:00 am-12:30 pm

FREE • All ages welcome

Drop in to Joppa Flats on Sundays this winter for an up-close wildlife experience! Watch our Bird Banding Station Manager Ben Flemer give live demonstrations on bird research and banding.

After capturing wild birds in Joppa's backyard, Ben brings them inside to measure, weigh, examine, and "band" them before releasing them, unharmed, back into the wild.

Banding is a process by which a tiny, metal band with a unique ID number is placed (carefully!) on a bird’s leg. This band allows researchers to track individual birds and connect their scientific data with data collected by other bird researchers.

While watching this scientific research in action, you’ll learn about your own backyard birds and why they're here!

Inclement Weather

Since bird safety is dependent on weather conditions, this program will not be held in inclement weather. If in doubt, please call Joppa Flats at 978-462-9998 to confirm that the program is on for that day.
