When Sanctuary Director Suzan Bellincampi published her first book, Martha’s Vineyard: A Field Guide to Island Nature, it was named one of the "Best Books of 2014" by the Boston Globe.

It was also one of seven books in the "Best of New England" category.

Readers adored it as well:

"I totally love this educational guide book! Having lived on the Vineyard for some time, this has helped me fall in love even more. Suzan Bellincampi has taken a delightful place and brought me closer to island nature and the appreciation and conservation of it. A wonderful must-read for all who truly love and care for Martha's Vineyard!"

A Second Look

Now Bellincampi is back with another book, The Nature of Martha’s Vineyard, a collection of nature essays that originally appeared in the "All Outdoors" column of the Vineyard Gazette.

Published by Mermaid & Motorcycle Press, this collection gathers the best of Suzan's nature columns from over more than 16 years.

Accompanied by stunning full-color photographs by Island photographer Tim Johnson, the book covers amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish, mammals, plants, sea life and more. And throughout it all, Bellincampi shares not only science but history, art, and local lore as well.

Island publisher and consultant Jan Pogue calls the book "a smashing retrospective of Suzan's Vineyard Gazette columns over the last almost two decades."

"Just wait until you read it," Pogue says.
