Programs for Schools at Broadmoor
School Education Coordinator
Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary's school programs are designed to develop students’ curiosity about nature into appreciation for their local environment. Each program is aligned with the Massachusetts Department of Education frameworks with strands in Life Science, Earth Science, History, and/or Geography.
Whether the program takes place at your site or ours, we will work with you to develop a curriculum that meets your needs and the frameworks.
Through guided explorations of our forests, marsh, and fields, elementary and middle school students make inquiries, investigate, classify, think critically, and draw conclusions. Programs include activities such as using tools, gathering data, and making observations. Each program will be geared to the age level and curriculum needs of the students.
Staff from Broadmoor will visit your class to provide students with a broader understanding of the natural world. Custom programs may include interactive discussions, specimen study, and educational activities. If possible, we’ll explore the woods and/or fields on school property. Observation skills and seasonal elements are emphasized. Many of our school programs can be taught in the classroom or outdoor exploration at your site.
Customized lessons or a series of lessons are available to interested home school groups. Programs will encourage children to interact with the environment through nature exploration, games and science-based learning. Group building activities to boost social interaction can be included. Portions of the program may take place inside our class room, however students should anticipate spending the majority of time outside on the wildlife sanctuary. Extension activities will be recommended after each lesson to help further participant learning and to share with their families.
We have seasonally themed programs for home-schooled students ages 5-10 yrs. Please contact us if you have a group that is interested. We are happy to explore options to meet your group’s needs.
Broadmoor teacher naturalists are available to visit preschools, providing wonderful learning opportunities for your students. The programs are a mix of hands-on activities, experiments, songs, demonstrations, stories, and nature walks. Our programs are specially designed to strengthen listening and observation skills while teaching students about the natural world.
We offer high-quality professional development for elementary and middle school teachers. Participants improve their content knowledge through hands-on investigations in nature, learn inquiry-based activities to facilitate with students, and practice techniques proven to better engage people in science learning.
We strive to run teacher professional development series annually. We participate in district development days and can create custom programs to support the needs of individual schools.
