About This Position

Mass Audubon is interested in learning more about how Diamondback Terrapins use our sanctuaries throughout their active season. In order to do this, we need reliable and interested volunteers to fill our turtle monitor position. The turtle monitor will perform two different Diamondback Terrapin monitoring surveys to collect data associated with our research questions. From mid-April to mid-October, volunteers will conduct Rapid Visual Assessments (headcount surveys) for Diamondback Terrapins at predetermined locations along the marsh. In June and July volunteers will look for female turtles and nest evidence. This species is a state-protected species, so volunteers will receive adequate, in-depth training to perform these research techniques and to fill out datasheets.

The survey shifts will fluctuate throughout the active season around the daytime high tide. Volunteers will have the opportunity to sign up for shifts in advance and are expected to take on at least one shift per week. The estimated time commitment for this position is 2-3 hours per shift. This position requires walking on sometimes uneven terrain for up to 2 miles, though distance varies by location. Volunteers will be required to track their volunteer hours within an online form.

The Volunteer Position will consist of both remote and in-person activities.
