About This Position

The Coastal Education Interns (CEIs) Interns will train with staff to learn about the ecology, human history and conservation projects that are happening locally along the Merrimack River, beachfront and estuary. Themes may include coastal ecology, marine biology, environmental awareness and stewardship, bird banding and migration, and invasive species. Training locations outdoors may include sandy beaches, rocky shores, tide pools, salt marshes, rivers, and ponds.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Train to lead our live animal program, Meet Beach Creatures outdoors
  • Interpret our onsite tanks and insect cages for visitors 
  • Help develop family-based programs about birds, gardens or photography outdoors
  • Interns will take on the role of mentor for teen naturalists who assist with programs 
  • Present information in a positive and engaging manner about climate action, sea level rise, coastal erosion and microplastics for a general audience 

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age or 16 years with 2 years' experience with Mass Audubon
  • Experience interacting with people of all ages, interests, and backgrounds
  • Possess strong public speaking skills
  • Experience developing lesson plans and/or activities for children
  • Demonstrates creativity, reliability, flexibility, and enthusiasm, and strong oral and written communication skills
  • Local knowledge of New England coastal ecology and rocky shore species a plus but not required
  • Experience with outdoor activities such as birding, gardening or wildlife photography
  • Valid driver’s license preferred
  • Must pass a background records check (CORI, SORI and driver's)

Compensation & Benefits

This is an unpaid internship.

Additional Information

Term: June, 2022 through August, 2022 

Commitment: 14 weeks for approximately 20 hours per week

Schedule: Flexible weekdays. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
