Choosing the Right Birdhouse

Our staff members know their stuff and are happy to help you pick out the right birdhouse! Here are a few tips:

  • Find the right fit. Different birds prefer different-sized openings as well as how high that hole is from the birdhouse floor.
  • Keep it simple. Wood is a good temperature and humidity regulator, unlike plastic and metal that can get too hot in the summer. Plus, birds tend to avoid bright, unnatural colors, so unpainted wood is best.
  • Remember location, location, location. The type of bird you want to attract will determine where you place a birdhouse. Bluebirds like open fields; chickadees, nuthatches, and titmice like open woods; woodpeckers prefer forest edges.
