3rd Annual Statewide Volunteer Day a Success

On April 25, 850 people at fourteen sites joined in our 3rd Annual Statewide Volunteer Day. Together these volunteers trimmed and cleared 10 miles of trails; removed 450 cubic yards of invasive plants and brush; spread 300 cubic yards of mulch and wood chips; and dug, weeded, and planted sixteen different bird, butterfly, hummingbird, vegetable, and community gardens across the state. In addition, they split and stacked firewood, picked up trash, hammered nails, built bluebird boxes and picnic tables, and repaired boardwalks and trails. Thanks to our volunteers, we accomplished, in one day, work that would have taken weeks, if not months, to complete.

Check out a slide show of the day and be sure to mark your calendar for next year's Statewide Volunteer Day on April 24, 2010.

Voices from the Day

I am really glad to help again this year, because I feel like this is my backyard. I don't have one of my own yet, so working here is really satisfying.
Sam, Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Lenox

It just feels good to be out here trying to make some kind of difference.
Mary, Boston Nature Center, Mattapan

We built such a beautiful new focal point at Felix Neck. The butterfly garden is incredible.
Marc, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, Martha's Vineyard
