Statewide Volunteer Day
Work for Wildlife

Volunteers Give 15 Wildlife Sanctuaries a Good Spring Cleaning on Saturday, April 27, 2013

Thank you to the approximately 650 volunteers who helped 15 of our wildlife sanctuaries spruce up and get ready for spring. We restored trails, planted trees, weeded gardens, hauled brush, battled invasive species, painted picnic tables, and sifted compost. With so many helping hands, we accomplished in one morning many tasks that would have taken our sanctuaries weeks—if not months—to complete!

Our volunteer corps included individuals and families, school and university groups, community organizations, and scout troops looking to make a difference – and indeed they did!
Here are some impressive examples of what our awesome volunteers accomplished:

  • 412 plants and shrubs planted
  • 30 truckloads of invasive plants (such as Bittersweet, Multiflora rose, and Buckthorn) removed
  • 48 large trash bags of Garlic Mustard pulled
  • 37 garden beds cleaned and prepped for planting
  • 9 picnic tables built, including one accessible table
  • 6 picnic tables given a new coat of paint
  • 6 flowering trees planted to attract native wildlife
  • 21 campsites cleared of brush and winter debris
  • 1 Nature Play Area created
  • 7 community garden plots cleared
  • 84 wheel barrels of weeds pulled
  • 1 stone wall rescued from encroaching invasive vines and shrubs
  • 352 feet of water line installed for irrigation
  • 4 turtle nesting area cleared
  • 13 bins of compost emptied, processed, and spread
  • 3 miles of trails cleared of fallen limbs/trees
  • 1 new rain garden planted
  • 9 nesting boxes built
  • 12 birdhouses cleaned to prepare for new nests

Be sure to check out the photo slideshow of the event. If you missed Statewide Volunteer Day, we hope you will consider volunteering at one of our wildlife sanctuaries during the coming year. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and help Mass Audubon protect the nature of Massachusetts.
