The Eastern Whip-poor-will Project was part of a larger bird conservation program called Birds to Watch that Mass Audubon created to ensure that birds have a future in the modern world. The goal of Birds to Watch is to develop effective, Citizen Science-based monitoring programs for birds that appear to be in decline, but do not yet qualify for protection under State or Federal endangered species legislation.

Based in large part on data provided by Mass Audubon’s citizen scientists, the Eastern Whip-poor-will was recently listed as a Species of Special Concern in Massachusetts.
