Explore by Kayak: Sandy Neck-Shorebirds and Horseshoe Crabs

Description

Spend the day exploring Barnstable Harbor, the scenic Great Marsh, and the remote cottage colony of Sandy Neck with an experienced naturalist and paddler.

Throughout the trip, we will focus our attention on searching for wildlife. Osprey, American oystercatchers, herons, egrets, and willets are just some of the species we may observe on this scenic paddle.

We will also search for horseshoe crabs while discussing the important work Mass Audubon is doing to help protect these living fossils, and hopefully tag some horseshoe crabs along the way!

Currents and winds are factors to consider in this system, and sustained periods of paddling is required of participants. Recent, previous paddling experience is required

Checking registration status.

Instructions

This trip meets and leaves from the landing on Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary (directions attached).

Please arrive 10 minutes in advance of the start of the program. Note that the ending time for kayak trips is approximate. We make every effort to finish the trip by the ending time listed but because we are dealing with wind, tide and differing degrees of experience on the part of the participants, there is always the possibility that the trip will run longer than anticipated. For this reason, we suggest that you not count on the trip ending at the time listed and plan accordingly.

Participants may choose among available tandem or single kayaks. However tandem kayaks are preferred due to strong currents. Participants may also bring their own kayak. All equipment is provided including small dry bags; all participants must wear life jackets.

We recommend that you bring sunscreen, water, bug spray, windbreaker, hat, towel, and lunch or a snack. There are no facilities, such as restrooms or water fountains, at the meeting places.

Please note our cancellation policy: In order to receive a refund, you must notify us of your cancellation at least 7 days before the program begins. If we cancel the program, you will receive a full refund. We reserve the right to change programs, schedules, and instructors, and to cancel programs due to low enrollment or unfavorable weather.
