Description
Join Wayne Petersen for a workshop all about shorebirds. We'll begin in the Joppa Flats Education Center classroom for a slide presentation overview. You'll learn identification tips and life history information that will step up your ability to identify shorebirds. After the introduction, we'll travel to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge to view a variety of sandpipers and plovers. The refuge has extensive mudflats, salt marshes, and salt pannes which are all excellent feeding areas and roosting sites for long-range migrants. We hope to see Black-bellied and Semipalmated plovers, Greater and Lesser yellowlegs, Semipalmated and Least sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitchers, Willets, and more.

Instructions
Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center. From there we will travel by Mass Audubon vans and carpool. Bring binoculars, a field guide to birds, and a scope if you have one. Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather. Participants should expect to walk trails with moderate terrain changes at a slow pace, for a mile or more.
Mass Audubon and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge encourage carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles inside the refuge. Our program passes cover our vans and carpooling, but not individual one-person vehicles within the caravan. Participants who choose not to carpool by driving without at least one passenger will be asked to cover the $5 fee at our front desk during registration. Thank you for helping to reduce the impact of vehicular traffic at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.
