Participate in the Oriole Project

What you can do to help:

  1. If this is your first year, become a Mass Audubon Oriole Project volunteer by signing up online. If you have any questions, please call 781-259-2161.
  2. Select one or more sites in your community where you think there may be nesting Baltimore orioles. These sites may include your backyard, a stretch of road, a trail at your favorite wildlife sanctuary, a city park, town forest, or conservation area.
  3. Visit your site(s) between May 15 and July 31 looking for evidence of nesting Baltimore orioles. The best evidence, of course, is an active nest; however, the presence of singing males and/or adult females during the breeding season is also of great interest. A single visit to a site is sufficient; however, we welcome additional information from multiple visits to your site(s).
  4. Submit each observation online. Or, you can download the Data Card form (PDF 54 K) and complete one copy for each observation. At the end of the season, mail the forms to Mass Audubon.
  5. Tell a friend about the Oriole Project. The more participation and observations we receive, the better our results will be.
The results will be compiled for the season and added to our website.

In our efforts to protect the wildlife of Massachusetts and the habitats upon which they depend, Mass Audubon needs the energetic support of volunteers like you. By participating in this Oriole Project, you will be making a valuable contribution to our understanding of the status of Baltimore orioles in our area.
