Online adoptions close at 10pm August 16th.The 9th Annual Allens Pond Duck Derby entrants raced under clear skies on Friday night, with 5406 rubber ducks launched into the channel between Barney’s Joy and Little Beach, riding the incoming tide. After a 15-20 minute race, the first 49 were plucked out and whisked away to the judges’ area and after a little bit more of a wait, the beloved, but leisurely “Slacker Quacker” settled into last place to close the event.
But, one duck prevailed in reaching the finish first – and that duck was “Madge”, adopted by Linda Gaudet of South Dartmouth, MA. She has been awarded the Grand Prize of enjoying dinner for two, anywhere in the world, with airfare and 2 nights’ lodging included. When Gina Purtell, Allens Pond Sanctuary Director, phoned her to notify her that she was the winner, Linda was not available (Gina left her a wonderful voice mail!) and we can only hope she is able to hear the great news above the roar of the crowd in the background who cheered Gina’s announcement on. We’re not sure where she’ll travel to, but past winners have travelled to Argentina, China, Tanzania, New Zealand, India, Aruba, Zambia and France.
