Canoe & Kayak Programs

Published: June 1, 2012

While many people explore nature by lacing up hiking boots and taking to the trail at Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuaries, each summer several sanctuaries give nature lovers a fresh way to enjoy local ecology—by canoe or kayak.

"The canoe and kayak programs embody the Mass Audubon mission," said Ian Ives, director of Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary. "The overriding theme is to give people an intimate connection to wildlife. It's a unique opportunity to see these places from the water and a different vantage point."

Even if you've made your way out to any of these locales, repeat journeys provide a lesson on how fast shorelines change. "The coastal environment is so dynamic," said Wellfleet Bay Education Coordinator Melissa Lowe. "Salt marshes, barrier beaches, new inlets-these areas provide new sights year after year."

For a different perspective of the nature of Massachusetts, trade in that walking stick for a paddle. Below are some upcoming water programs offered around the state.
