Introduction to Education Volunteering

Nature educator Alice L

Joppa Flats is the premier provider of nature education for children and for educators in the lower Merrimack River Valley. Take advantage of our expertise and join us for Introduction to Volunteering: Field Trips on Plum Island, a new series of trainings designed for adults who love the outdoors and want to learn about sharing nature with others.

September 5–24
Tuesdays or Sundays, 8:30 am–12:30 pm

Led by School and Youth Education Coordinator Lisa Hutchings, this program prepares participants to join our team of gifted educators and naturalists. Our teacher-naturalists will provide complete in-the-field training at local habitats. Participants in the program may apply to become education volunteers at Joppa Flats.

No experience is necessary. All classes meet at Joppa Flats and then continue in the field.

Location-specific topics include:

  • Salt Marsh Ecology & Maritime Forest
  • Rocky Shore Tide Pools & Sandy Beach
  • Bird Migration at the Banding Station & Birding By Van

Please Note: Themes are weather dependent and subject to change.

Members $25/session | Nonmembers $35.00/session

A full refund of training program fees will be granted upon completion of four shifts as an education volunteer. Joppa Flats education volunteers are required to commit to one weekday each week for the fall 2017 season (September through early November).
