Science in the Field: Utilizing Local Ecosystems as Laboratories for Investigations

Looking for ways to integrate field research into your classroom? Do you want to model authentic data collection with your students? In this hybrid summer institute, grades 4-10 educators will learn about collaborating with practicing field ecologists; conducting investigations designed by students; collecting environmental data; and participating in citizen science programs. At every step in the field, you'll work with Mass Audubon educators to explore instructional practices for working with students to collect data in the field and use it to make predictions and claims about the health of an ecosystem.

$425 per participant; $400 per participant for team of two or more teachers from the same school district
This hybrid professional development institute combines 16 hours of online instruction with a one-week onsite component. During the onsite component, educators will spend a day at each partner institution’s site participating in hands-on inquiry investigations combined with content sessions.

In partnership with the Museum Institute for Teaching Science (MITS) and other museums and nature centers, Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuaries in three regions are offering graduate-level courses for upper elementary, middle school, and high school educators.
Participate in content and skill development sessions taught by professional educators and scientists. Daily activities include indoor inquiry-based classroom experiences and outdoor field experiences. Take home investigations you can use in your classroom and a collection of teaching resources and field trip ideas!
