State of the Birds:Documenting Changes in Massachusetts Birdlife
Explore the Data
Find results for a specific bird species or search by categories.
There are two ways to view the information used in the State of the Birds report:
Search by Specific Bird Species:
You can see data for a specific bird species, either by common name or Latin name. We have species accounts for over 300 species that are seen in Massachusetts.
Information from the Mass Audubon Breeding Bird Atlas, the USGS Breeding Bird Survey, and National Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count are displayed, as well as the overall “Conservation Status.” Other characteristics of each bird species are also displayed, such as habitat associations, behavior, migration strategy, and range. In some cases, information obtained from additional, relevant data sets is noted.
Search by Categories:
You can generate tables for various bird groupings. For instance, you can isolate those birds that (1) breed in grassland habitat. Or you can combine groupings and isolate birds that (1) breed in grassland habitat and (2) are obligate breeders in that habitat (i.e they breed only in grassland habitat).
These are the categories available:
- Habitat type: grassland, shrubland, forest, freshwater marsh, saltwater marsh
- Conservation status: endangered, threatened, special concern, least concern
- Behavior: ground nesting, human structure nesters, common feeder birds, aerial insectivores
- Range: southern edge of range, northern edge of range, Massachusetts roughly in middle of range
- Migration Strategy: long-distance, short-distance, year-round resident
The information conveyed in the resulting tables includes information from the Mass Audubon Breeding Bird Atlas, the USGS Breeding Bird Survey, and National Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count.
