Stranded Sea Turtles Location: S. Wellfleet, MA Enjoy walking Cape Cod Bay beaches in winter? We‘re looking for volunteers to walk bayside beaches from Dennis to Truro just after high tides in November and December to search for stranded, cold-stunned sea turtles. Walk your favorite beach and if you find a turtle, mark the spot, and then call our turtle hotline: 508-349-2615 (ext 104 after hours). See our website for information and further directions: http://www.massaudubon.org/Nature_Connection/Sanctuaries/Wellfleet/seaturtles.php
Based on wind direction, we can sometimes predict which areas are more likely to see turtle strandings, and we call and assign people to check those beaches. Contact us for further information or to be placed on the “on-call” list for specific beach assignments.
Volunteers are also needed to drive turtles to the New England Aquarium in Boston. Directions are provided; cars must be kept cool to protect the turtles.
