Birds of the Massachusetts Coast: Piping Plovers & More
An Exhibition of Photographs by John Van de Graaff

On Exhibit: May 19 - June 30, 2010
Reception & Talk: Saturday, May 22, 2 p.m.

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is pleased to exhibit a selection of fine bird images captured by John Van de Graaff on the Massachusetts coast over the last few years. Piping plovers and least terns are largely featured in this exhibit, but it also includes various other shorebirds, terns, gulls, and ospreys. Most of the images are from Mass Audubon's Allen's Pond Sanctuary in Westport. Some twenty pairs of piping plovers nest there each season, along with up to 200 pairs of least terns. Both species are listed as threatened-the plovers at the federal level and the terns by the state. The images illustrate the birds' characteristic activities, including courtship and nurturing and feeding behaviors.

Artist's presentation and reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. It is free with sanctuary admission.

John Van de Graaff began photographing birds seriously in 2001. The Burnett Gallery in Amherst hosted a key exhibition of his photos in 2007, followed by a smaller exhibit at Wellfleet Bay. He's a member of the Hampshire Bird Club and the Pioneer Valley Photographic Artists (PVPA). Born in Boston, he now lives in Northampton.
