Day Camp Instructor
Location: Wellfleet

June 21 to September 3, 2010 or July 12 to August 27, 2010

Work full-time at an 1100-acre coastal sanctuary on Cape Cod teaching natural history to children from Pre-school to Grade 8 (will work with similar age groups all summer). Responsibilities include working with a partner to develop, plan, and implement natural history lessons, as well as conduct public programs for families on and off the sanctuary. Some instructors are responsible for taking campers on off-site field trips, including hikes, snorkeling & kayaking trips, and other natural history excursions.

Qualifications: Must be familiar with Cape Cod natural history (especially marine biology) and have experience working with children outdoors. Helpful to have or be working towards a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies, Biology, Education, or related field, and be Red Cross First Aid/ CPR certified.

Benefits: Salary starting at $9.50/hour, shared housing available at $30 per week.

Coastal Waterbird Field Assistants
Location: South Wellfleet, MA

Responsibilities include monitoring, protecting and collecting data on nesting least terns and piping plovers; construction and maintenance of electric fencing and exclosures.

Qualifications: Prior experience in avian field monitoring and/or as a naturalist preferred. Ability to use a kayak a plus. Also, if you have teaching experience, that would be a plus. Applicants should have or be working towards a B.Sc. in wildlife biology/management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, biology, geography, or related field. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills, be in good physical condition, and may need to use your own vehicle.

Positions begin in April and continue through August.

Benefits: Pay is $9/hour or more depending on experience. Inexpensive housing may be available.

Environmental Educator
Location: South Wellfleet, MA

May 4–June 20, 2010

Lead field walks for family groups and school groups (primarily grades 3-9), focusing on Cape Cod natural history. Number of hours per week vary (dependent on availability and number of programs scheduled).

Qualifications: Knowledge of Cape Cod natural history and wildlife, especially marine biology; experience in teaching and/or working with children; have or working towards a Bachelor‘s degree in biology, environmental studies, or related field; certification in CPR/First Aid preferred; sense of humor, flexibility, and willingness to learn.

Benefits: Salary starts at $9.50/hour. Shared housing is available at $30 per week.

Seasonal Exhibit Hall Naturalist
Location: South Wellfleet, MA

Work with volunteers and staff to educate the public who visit our natural history exhibit hall. Help maintain a temporary collection of live specimens and create displays and information about the specimens on display.

Responsibilities include collecting, caring for and feeding temporary live animals for display. Designing temporary displays and creating informational write-ups about the specimens on exhibit. Leading tours of the exhibit hall and creating programs about some of the habitats and animals found on the sanctuary. Encouraging visitors, adults and children to observe, discover and appreciate nature inside and out.

Qualifications: Applicants should have or be working towards a B.Sc. in wildlife biology/management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, biology, geography, or related field. Applicant with strong graphic and design skills are preferred. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills.

Position begins in late May and continues through the end of August.

Benefits: Pay is $10/hour or more depending on experience. Inexpensive housing may be available.

Seasonal Property Worker – Part Time
Location: South Wellfleet, MA

Assist our property manager with custodial and maintenance duties for large new nature center and campground. Lots of outdoor work, too! No experience necessary but should be in good physical condition and be able to lift 50 lbs. Weekend morning shifts required.

Start mid-April. $10/hour.

Benefits: Dormitory housing is available for $25-$30/week.

Tern Island Monitor/Coastal Waterbird Field Assistant
Location: South Wellfleet, MA

Conduct biological inventories on a small island, Tern Island, Chatham, MA. Collect data on plant communities; determine shorebird roost numbers and compositions help with mapping and ecological management planning.

Responsibilities include monitoring, protecting and collecting productivity data on nesting terns and piping plovers, least terns, oyster catchers, willets and other coastal nesting birds; construction and maintenance of electric fencing and exclosures.

Qualifications: Prior experience in avian field monitoring and/or conducting biological inventories preferred. Ability to use a kayak is a plus. Applicants should have or be working towards a B.Sc. in wildlife biology/management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, biology, geography, or related field. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills, be in good physical condition, and may need to use your own vehicle.

Turtle Field Assistant
Location: South Wellfleet, MA

Responsibilities include tracking, monitoring, and collecting data on diamondback terrapins and box turtles in Orleans and Wellfleet.

Qualifications: Some experience as a naturalist is helpful. Kayaking skill is a plus. Applicants should have or be working toward a degree in wildlife biology or management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, biology, or other related field. Applicants should be in good physical condition, be able to work flexible hours, and have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.

Benefits: Position runs early June through August. Pay is $9/hour. Inexpensive housing is available.
