Exploring Nature with Oak Knoll
Environmental Education and Natural Science programs to support Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks

Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary offers a diversity of programs that were designed with the Massachusetts Department of Education frameworks in mind and cover strands in Life Science, Earth Science, History, and/or Geography. Math skills are used in many programs. Whether the program takes place at your site or ours, we will work with you to develop a curriculum that meets your needs and the frameworks.

Why Choose Oak Knoll?

Talented Teacher-Naturalists - Our trained leaders love sharing their sense of wonder and knowledge of the natural world with children!

Diverse Habitats - Our sanctuary holds acres of woods, wetlands, ponds, and fields for students to explore!

Enriched Learning Experiences - We strive to expand the horizons of students by giving them learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Links to Curriculum Frameworks - Oak Knoll provides a unique way to incorporate Learning Standards into your curriculum.

Picnic Area and Gift Shop - Enjoy a picnic in the yard or visit the gift shop after your program!

Field Trips to Oak Knoll
Through guided exploration of our woods, wetlands, lake, and fields, students are challenged to make inquiries, investigate, classify, think critically, and draw conclusions. Programs include activities such as using tools, gathering data, and making observations. Each program will be geared to the age level and curriculum needs of the students involved. We Come to You

Classroom Presentations and Outdoor Explorations at Your Site
Staff from Oak Knoll will visit your class to provide students with a broader understanding of the natural world. Activities may include interactive discussions, specimen study, and educational games. If possible, we’ll explore the woods and/or fields on school property. Observation skills and seasonal elements are emphasized. The majority of the programs listed in this brochure can be taught as a classroom presentation or outdoor exploration at your site (to be determined by the specific resources available).

Pre-K and Kindergarten School Programs

Oak Knoll’s Wildlife Programs for young children provide wonderful learning opportunities for your students. The programs are a mix of hands-on activities, experiments, songs, demonstrations, stories and nature walks. Our programs are specially designed to strengthen listening and observation skills while teaching students about the natural world. If you would like a certain topic taught that is not covered in this brochure, contact us and we’ll work with you to develop a curriculum that meets your needs. Please note that programs marked “outdoor” require school grounds or nature areas for best results.

Programs generally last about 45 minutes and are available any time during the year. Field trips can be scheduled to Oak Knoll or can be conducted at your site. For more information download our preschool brochure (PDF).
