Farm Day at Daniel Webster – September 29
Just over a quarter of a century ago concerned citizens of Marshfield came together to find a way to purchase the farm of retiring dairy farmer Edward Dwyer for open space for the community, contacting the new Mass Audubon South Shore Sanctuaries office for help. Thanks to persistent public outreach and creative fundraising, highlighted each year by an event titled "Save Dwyer Farm Days", Mass Audubon purchased the more than 350 acres that made up the farm. Re-named for one of its historic owners, the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary today holds more than 500 acres of grassland, red maple swamp, pond, and river habitat. Through the seasons, Daniel Webster is home to nesting bobolinks, purple martins and common yellowthroats as well as wintering owls, hawks and harriers.
What began as a hopeful fundraiser in the early 1980s continues today as an annual "Farm Day" celebration of agricultural and natural life in Marshfield. The 2007 Farm Day festivities will feature:
- Live bird of prey demonstrations by Wingmasters
- Live bluegrass music by The Resonators
- Hayrides through the grasslands
- Farm Animals
- Giant hay maze for kids
- Arts and crafts show
- Children's games and crafts
- Homemade soups and baked goods
Farm Day is an all-day family event. Entrance to the event is $7, but just $5 if you are a member to Mass Audubon. Children 3 and under are free. Ample parking is available on site.
