What is Moose Hill Community Farm?
Moose Hill Community Farm follows the format of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Members of the CSA buy shares in a farm and receive fresh, locally grown food every week during the growing season (June through October). Shareholders receive a wide variety of foods harvested at their peak of ripeness, flavor, and vitamin and mineral content.
How Does Moose Hill Community Farm Work?
Crops are planted in succession to provide support for biodiversity, and a continuous weekly supply of mixed vegetables chosen for flavor and nutritional value. Moose Hill Community Farm will grow many different types of vegetables so shareholders can expect a wide variety. This greatly diminishes the risk of crop failure while enhancing soil fertility without the use of synthetic chemicals. Organic growing techniques, such as crop rotation, companion planting, green manuring, and composting are standard procedures.
What is a Share?
Each week Moose Hill Community Farm harvests fresh, ripe crops that are divided equally among CSA members. Members usually receive their food within 24-hours of picking. A "full share" is generally enough for a family of four or a couple on a vegetarian diet and a "single share" is about half this amount. The price of a share is comparable to what you would pay for this same quantity of high-quality produce at a supermarket. Because the food is grown locally, crops will vary as they ripen throughout the season.
What Kind of Crops Are Grown?
A sampler of crops throughout the season are: beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, peas, mustard greens, salad greens, arugula, kale/braising greens, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, corn, strawberries, herbs, sunflowers, or zinnias.
Working at the Farm
As part of their share, all CSA shareholders agree to assist at the farm for eight hours throughout the growing season. This both helps reduce expenses and gives the shareholders an opportunity to learn about and participate in food production. The work during the season is usually divided between harvesting and assisting at the distribution table.
