Seasonal

Coastal Waterbird Field Assistant II
Location: Multiple locations

Mid-May to mid-August 2012

Multiple positions based at:

Mass Audubon is seeking to fill seasonal Field Assistant II positions to conduct research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. Responsibilities include 1) collect biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of coastal waterbirds including abundance and distribution of target species, 3) accomplish the wildlife management and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program, 3) assist with sanctuary-based Coastal Waterbird Program staff throughout the region, 4) assist in management of databases including abundance, productivity and behavioral data; create GIS/Google Earth maps of coastal resources, 5) assist in compilation of data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities, 6) conduct research on special projects as directed.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a B.S. or B.A. or higher in wildlife biology/management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, or related field, as well as 3 months previous field experience. Prior experience in avian field research and management strongly preferred. Applicants should have demonstrated experience utilizing judgment in field-based wildlife research or management projects. Experience in behavioral data collection, band-reading, wildlife tracking, coastal wildlife management issues, and GIS mapping preferred. Small boat-handling experience preferred. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills, be in good physical condition, be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather), and have their own vehicle.

Benefits: This is a full time position from mid-May through mid-August. Rate of payment is $11.50-$12.50/hour depending on experience. Housing may be available for payroll deduction of $25-35/wk. Field travel reimbursement will be provided. For more information, visit www.massaudubon.org/cwp

Coastal Waterbird Field Assistant III
Location: Multiple locations

  • Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, Barnstable MA (covering field sites in Boston and Cape Cod),
  • North River Wildlife Sanctuary, Marshfield MA (covering field sites Cohasset to Plymouth),
  • Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Wellfleet MA (covering field sites Provincetown to Brewster),
  • Nantucket, and
  • South Beach, Chatham (*note this position requires living in a remote camp setting on a barrier beach)

Mass Audubon is seeking to fill seasonal Field Assistant III positions to train and supervise staff and volunteers in conducting research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. Responsibilities include 1) supervise field crew (field assistants and volunteers) to meet research, wildlife management and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program, 2) train and supervise field assistants and volunteers in collection and management of biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of coastal waterbirds, 3) accomplish the wildlife management and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program, 3) assist with sanctuary-based Coastal Waterbird Program staff throughout the region, 4) assist in management of databases including abundance, productivity and behavioral data; create GIS/Google Earth maps of coastal resources, 5) compile data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities, 6) supervise and conduct research on special projects as directed.

Three to six months prior experience with piping plover/tern/avian field monitoring, data collection and management required. Applicants should have demonstrated experience utilizing judgment in field-based wildlife research and management projects. Experience in behavioral data collection, band-reading, wildlife tracking, coastal wildlife management issues, and GIS mapping preferred. Small boat-handling experience preferred. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills, be in good physical condition, able to lift approximately 40 lb, and walk extended distances on beaches and other terrain. Employee must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather), and have their own vehicle.

Benefits: This is a full time position from mid-April through mid-August. Rate of payment is $12.00-$13.50/hour depending on experience. Housing may be available for payroll deduction of $25-35/wk. Field travel reimbursement will be provided. For more information, visit www.massaudubon.org/cwp

Volunteer

Butterfly Garden Volunteers
Location: Cummaquid, MA

Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for gardeners interested in “adopting a butterfly garden” within the sanctuaries new Butterfly Mosaic Trail in Cummaquid. Adopters would be responsible for:

Stewardship of one of 10 small 12’x12’ native wildflower garden during the growing season including:

  • Weeding, watering, feeding, plant division and some plant propagation in our green house.
  • Other tasks might include interpretation for sanctuary visitors and nature walk co-leading if appropriate.

    Farming and Animal Husbandry Volunteers
    Location: Barnstable, MA

    Assist our partners in Sustainable Agriculture, Ocean Song Farm, in farming, animal husbandry and other associated activities. Training for the various farm related chores will take place on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. to cultivate active crews and then formalize schedules that work them.

    Activities and Opportunities can include:

    • Gardening, weeding, watering, picking veggies and flowers
    • Taking care of goats
    • Cleaning chicken coops and nests
    • Milking
    • Worming of goats, trimming hooves
    • Taking care of baby animals
    • Getting supplies with us
    • Fiber work
    • Goat walks
    • Moving fencing and helping with the grazing management
    • Moving the her through shepherding
    • Carpentry, building shelters and enclosures
    What a wonderful opportunity to learn what is involved in bringing food to our tables, and gardening methods for sustainable agriculture!

    Nest Box Monitors
    Location: Cummaquid, MA

    Help build and monitor our bluebird nest boxes at Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, March through August.

    Qualifications: You must be familiar with bird identification and have an interest in bird behavior and ecology. Training will be provided.

    Property/Ecological Management Volunteers
    Location: Cummaquid and East Falmouth MA

    Energetic people of all ages needed to help with a variety of ecological management projects and property work at Long Pasture and Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuaries. Projects include field habitat restoration, invasive tree and shrub removal, ornamental tree care and a variety of trail work including mowing.

    Qualifications: Ability to use hand tools and mowing equipment. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without supervision required.

    Benefits: Get a good workout while helping Long Pasture. Work days are flexible. Training provided.

    Sanctuary Volunteers
    Location: Barnstable, MA

    Ecological Management Team Member

    If you enjoy working outdoors, you can help Long Pasture by participating in conservation activities, such as trail clearing, invasive species removal, mowing and more. If you have carpentry skills, you can build nest boxes, tern decoys, and other projects to aid in attracting and managing wildlife.

    Program Leader

    If you have a background in education or working with groups, you may wish to lead our summer tidal flat explorations or natural history tours of Long Pasture. We will provide training and background materials, and you provide the enthusiasm. You will be rewarded by the joy and amazement of visitors discovering the flats and the sanctuary for the first time.

    Educational Assistant

    If you enjoy working with children, you can assist our educators during our summer morning art and ecology program for elementary aged kids. We may also have opportunities to help with classroom visits and field trips to the sanctuary. You can help to inspire a sense of wonder!

    Special Events Assistant

    If you would like to attend concerts and festivals, you can join in the festivities by selling tickets, manning a booth, offering information to guests, and of course, enjoying the view. You may also assist in event planning and marketing.

    Citizen Scientist

    If you are interested in wildlife and research, you can participate in one of Mass Audubon’s ongoing wildlife studies, such as Horseshoe Crab Population surveys, Osprey nest productivity monitoring, breeding bird censuses, and others. Your work will directly contribute to databases that track species over time.

    Special Projects

    If you have a special talent or interest that you would like to share with Long Pasture, we invite you to meet with us and plan a special project. Previous projects have included creation of a lichen brochure, illustrations for nature guides, and photographing the sanctuary.
